Self-trust

When facing the moment when we need to make the life-changing choice, we feel nervous and lack of confidence, since it's hard to predict the outcome of the choice.
People used to say that we should believe in ourselves when facing such moment.
"Follow your heart."
However, most of us didnt't take this approach when we meet such scenario in reality.
We are making the choice that our family and environment make for us, and regretting the outcome of the choice, since it's not what we desire for.
Why we're acting in this way? Why we can't believe in ourselves in life-changing moment?
Before answer the questions, we should ask ourselves, am I trustworthy?
Ask yourself whether the below statements have ever occur in your daily life:
a) I've promise to myself to exercise 3 times each week, but I never keep the promises, even for 2 weeks.
b) I've promise to myself to wake up early at the next day, but I used to dismiss the thought at the very next morning.
c) I've promise to myself to quit some bad habits, i.e. smoking and drinking, but still doing it after few days.
We used to make promises to ourselves, and break them easily.
We are irresponsible to the self-promises.
Like withdrawing from a bank account without depositing, gradually our trust to ourselves becomes virtually non-existent.
We're not trustworthy to ourselves.
So, when facing the moment to choose, we rather believe what other people suggest us, because deep inside our heart we know that they're more trustworthy than ourselves.
